NHL Trade Talk Recap: Treliving Fired, Oilers Behind Cassidy Downfall, and Buium News
A coaching shake-up, Brad Treliving has been fired, and the Canucks might have to pay their new star defenceman in this NHL news cycle.
Just minutes before this update went live, the Toronto Maple Leafs made a major move, firing general manager Brad Treliving. The news quickly overshadowed the Vegas Golden Knights’ decision to part ways with their head coach, which only hours earlier felt like the bigger shock. What’s next for the Maple Leafs? Where will Bruce Cassidy land?
At the same time, the Minnesota Wild could be positioning themselves to pursue a pair of American stars this offseason, should they become available. Might they take a really big run at either Auston Matthews or Brady Tkachuk if they become available?
Finally, after dealing elite defenceman Quinn Hughes, the Vancouver Canucks may have already identified his replacement.
Bruce Cassidy Was Already on Thin Ice
The most surprising news of the weekend was the firing of Vegas Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman says signs were visible as early as a playoff series with Edmonton last season. Cassidy was let go on Sunday and replaced by John Tortorella.

Cassidy, known for his demanding style, has a track record of wearing on players over time—especially when results start to slip. Friedman pointed to a key red flag during the Oilers series, highlighting a tense pre-Game 5 meeting between Cassidy and his players that strained several relationships within the room.
While multiple players reportedly voiced concerns to management, the Vegas Golden Knights initially stood behind their coach. Still, there was a growing sense among insiders that Cassidy’s time with the team was limited.
What truly caught many off guard, however, was the decision to bring in John Tortorella as his replacement. The takeaway remains that Vegas operates as it wants, with no regard for what anyone else expects.

First Domino Falls for the Maple Leafs
After months of speculation, the first domino has fallen after the Maple Leafs fired Brad Treliving as General Manager on Monday. There has been much talk of the future of both Treliving and head coach Craig Berube, and now we know the GM will not be with the Leafs next season.
Before Monday night’s game in Anaheim, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced it is parting ways with Treliving. Treliving spent nearly three years with the team, making a number of moves that drew mixed reactions. Trades involving Brandon Carlo and Fraser Minten last season, as well as recent deadline deals, stand out as some of the more controversial moments of his tenure.
While many expected a change in leadership, most anticipated it would come during the summer, given how few games remain in the season. No replacement has been named at this time.
The Maple Leafs have struggled mightily this year, sitting 24th in the league at the time of this report.
“Throughout the course of this season, there has been deep analysis into both the current state of the Maple Leafs organization and the direction needed to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering a Stanley Cup championship to the city,” said MLSE President & CEO Keith Pelley. He will meet with the media tomorrow at 2 pm.

Zeev Buium Gives Vancouver Much-Needed Hope
The Vancouver Canucks are as low as you can get for an NHL franchise, but that means the only place to go is up. The start of that upward trajectory for the Canucks is part of the return they got for superstar defenceman Quinn Hughes. Zeev Buium might be Vancouver’s next cornerstone defenceman and $9 million man.

Buium has shown that he definitely has what it takes to be a top-pairing defenseman in the NHL. While he hasn’t replaced Quinn Hughes just yet, he is definitely on the right track to fill those shoes. Buium has recorded 23 points, including five goals and 18 assists, this season.
With names like Luke Hughes and Jackson LaCombe setting the market around $9 million for a player of his age and calibre, expectations are high.
