NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup: Red Wings Hot, Sens & Blackwood
In our NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (Jan 12), Red Wings win seventh straight, Senators stop Stars win streak, Blackwood and Vezina
Welcome to today’s NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (January 13). Each morning, we will bring you three key NHL stories. Here, you can stay updated on the latest team wins and losses, trade talk, and player news from around the NHL. Mackenzie Blackwood remains hot, as do the Detroit Red Wings, a seven-game winning streak was broken on Sunday.

Ottawa Senators End Dallas Stars’ Winning Streak After Seven
It had to happen sooner or later. But on Sunday, the Ottawa Senators played the giant killer to end the Dallas Stars’ seven-game winning streak with a 3-2 win. Stepping in for the injured goalie Linus Ullmark, young Leevi Meriläinen was the star for the second night in a row. He registered 24 saves to earn his second straight victory.
Tim Stützle, Josh Norris, and Matthew Highmore all scored for Ottawa. The game wasn’t without drama. For a moment, the Stars thought they had tied the game on a goal from Roope Hintz. However, the goal was overturned. That was bad luck for the Stars, but good luck for the winning Senators!
Red Wings Stay Hot, Smash Kraken 6-2 for Seventh Straight Win
The Red Wings have now taken over from the Stars and are absolutely rolling! Since the team changed their head coach from Derek Lalonde to Todd McLellan, it’s been different in the Motor City. On Sunday, the Wings lit up the Kraken with four goals in just over four minutes, jumping out to a 4-0 lead and never looking back. The game ended in a 6-2 blowout.
Larkin, Gustafsson, Kane, and Kasper all chipped in with a goal and an assist. Things got ugly fast for Seattle. Grubauer got yanked after letting in three goals on just four shots. Detroit’s on a heater, showing no signs of slowing down!
Mackenzie Blackwood Making a Surprise Vezina Push
In our final NHL roundup, Mackenzie Blackwood is turning heads in Colorado! When he came to the Avalanche from the San Jose Sharks, the Mile High Avs were desperate for a goalie to keep the team in games. They found one in Blackwood. In his time there, he’s been the answer. He put up a solid .920 save percentage and a strong 8-2-1 record. Even more impressive? His high-danger save percentage sits at .848—second only to Ilya Samsonov.
No goalie has won the Vezina after being traded mid-season since 1981-82, but Blackwood might be the guy to break that streak. Keep an eye on him! He’ll have a tough time beating Connor Hellebuyck for the Vezina, but he’s been the answer for the Avalanche, even if he doesn’t top the great Jets’ goalie.
