Maple Leafs Pipeline Report: Grebenkin, Minten & Akhtyamov

The Toronto Marlies have had a poor start to the 2025 year. In this Marlies’ report, who played well and who didn’t?

The Toronto Marlies faced a mixed week to start 2025, securing one win but suffering two tough losses. Despite challenges with special teams and consistency, several players stood out positively and some negatively. In this Marlies report, here’s a closer look at who’s trending up and who needs improvement in the Maple Leafs’ pipeline.

Marlies Players Who Rated a Thumbs Up

Nikita Grebenkin

Verdict: Grebenkin was the Marlies’ most dynamic forward this week, scoring three goals and adding an assist over three games. His chemistry with Fraser Minten and Alex Nylander drove much of the team’s offense. He finished scoring chances, which is promising for his development.

Fraser Minten

Verdict: It’s good to report that the Marlies’ Minten scored one goal and added three assists. Since dropping to the Marlies, he’s shown strong playmaking skills. His ability to set up teammates and maintain offensive pressure was a bright spot for the Marlies. He’s showing that he has a solid future in the NHL.

Alex Steeves

Verdict: In a tough week, Steeves was one of the Marlies’ best offensive players. He scored two goals, including a power-play goal against Utica. His offensive production has earned him a selection to the AHL All-Star Game. This further lifts his status as a potential NHL call-up.

Marlies Players Who Rated a Thumbs Down

Artur Akhtyamov

Verdict: Although Akhtyamov started the Marlies’ season on fire, he struggled in his lone start this past week. He allowed three goals on six shots before leaving the game due to injury. While the injury complicates his evaluation, his shaky performance raises concerns about his readiness for the AHL level.

Alex Nylander

Verdict: Despite recording three assists, Nylander’s turnovers directly contributed to goals against, including a costly giveaway versus Utica. He’s not the same gifted player as his brother William, and he can lose focus on the ice. If he’s going to move up to the Maple Leafs, he must improve his decision-making and defensive responsibility.

Topi Niemelä

Verdict: Over the week, in the Marlies report, Niemelä’s defensive play was inconsistent. He made a few defensive errors that led to opposition scoring chances. Although he was solid on offense, his defensive lapses have slowed his progression toward the NHL.

Looking Ahead for the Marlies

After the Marlies head to Winnipeg for back-to-back games against the Manitoba Moose, they take a long road trip out west for the rest of January. The Marlies must elevate their play between injuries and inconsistency to stay on the Maple Leafs’ radar.
