After a day of trades Tuesday, Wednesday wasn’t about to get left behind. The Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers made a deal early as the Leafs aquired forward Denis Malgin for forward Mason Marchment.
The trade may have something to do with the fact that Andreas Johnsson was announced as out for six months but the deal is hardly a blockbuster.
Malgin, 23, has four goals and 12 points in 36 games with the Panthers this season. He plays at the NHL league minimum of $750,000 and is scheduled to become a restricted free agent in July. He did score 11 goals and 22 points in 51 games during the 2017-18 season for the Panthers so there might be some scoring there.
Marchment, meanwhile, appeared in four games with the Maple Leafs this season, posting one assist. He had 13 goals and 18 points in 24 games with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies this season.

Andreas Johnsson Out Six Months
News of Toronto Maple Leafs forward Andreas Johnsson being out eight weeks was announced on Wednesday as much worse than expected. After having knee surgery, he is expected to miss six months.
Johnsson, 25, has eight goals and 21 points in 43 games this season. This now frees up $3.4 million in cap space the Maple Leafs can use to try and acquire another forward as rental heading into the playoffs.
