Lou Lamoriello has won the 2019-20 Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award.
A very deserving award winner, he’s taken a franchise that few expected to do much, had ownership and arena issues, one of the better centers in teh game leave and turned them into one of the most well-run, accountable franchises in the entire NHL. Since he came in, there has been a major culture change within the organization.
Among the things he’s done since taking over:
- Hired Barry Trotz as head coach
- Helped implement a defensive structure that led to the best goals against turnaround in the NHL history
- Two consecutive playoff appearances
- One second round appearance -One Conference Finals appearance
Colin Campbell and David Gregory presented Lamoriello with the award on Saturday and when he accepted he said, “This award that I am being recognized for is really a team award… I accept it on behalf of the entire New York Islanders organization.”
The Islanders, his team, are still battling in this year’s playoffs, trying to fight their way back from a 2-0 series defect against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
