Host Suggests Dicey Blockbuster Trade Between Red Wings and Ducks
Would a huge blockbuster trade idea thrown out there between the Red Wings and Ducks make sense for both sides?
If the Detroit Red Wings have trouble trading Dylan Larkin, and the Anaheim Ducks can’t come to an agreement with Cutter Gauthier, is there a possible fit between these two teams that would make sense for a blockbuster trade? What Chaos! seemed to think there’s a world in which a big move might make sense, but it’s dicey.
Hosts Pete Blackburn and DJ Bean talked about the Larkin and Gauthier situations in Detroit and Anaheim and couldn’t help but draw a connection. After Blackburn said he’d like to see Gauthier wind up in Pittsburgh so that the rivalry between the Philadelphia Flyers and Penguins has more juice, he added, “I’ll just throw this out there…”
“What if you had like Cutter Gauthier to Detroit for Dylan Larkin and Alex Sandin Pellikka?” While admitting it would be a big return from Detroit, he explained the fit.
He said the Ducks really need a good defenseman on the right side. After losing Jacob Trouba, John Carlson and Radko Gudas, they’re short on blueliners. “If you’re already out on Larkin and you bring in a player like Cutter Gauthier for the extra cost of Sandin Pellikka, I don’t know how palatable that would be, but it would be interesting.”
The argument against it was the return and the fact that the Red Wings would have to sign Gauthier for $16 million per season for a left-winger. The issue, of course, is that Detroit is left without a top-line center, even if Gauthier’s 41 goals are appealing.
There’s A Problem with This Kind of Red Wings Trade
The question becomes whether the Red Wings try to make the most out of a trade that you feel you have to make and then solve the issues that result from the trade later? Do they lose a top center and get a top winger, just to go out and try to find a top center again? That’s an issue as centers are harder to find, but Gauthier may be a weapon that Detroit doesn’t want to pass up on if they see him as a top piece.

The salary price for Gauthier has to be a concern, as does the fact he seems to work his way out of rosters because he’s looking for the best fit for himself at all times. Do the Red Wings want to bring that kind of personality on board?
It would be a huge swing and a big blockbuster trade. It would also require Larkin expanding his list to include the Ducks, which as of now, his list does not.
