Golden Knights Make Ruthless Coaching Change: Hire Tortorella

The Vegas Golden Knights have fired head coach Bruce Cassidy and replaced him with polarizing coach John Tortorella.

The Vegas Golden Knights have fired head coach Bruce Cassidy and replaced him with John Tortorella. Cassidy had one more year on his deal next seaon and Tortorella only has a contract until the end of the season.

The team, specifically GM Kelly McCrimmon, revealed the news on Sunday, noting in a statement: “We thank Bruce Cassidy for his dedication to our hockey club and community over the past four seasons.”

McCrimmon added:

“Under Bruce’s leadership, we reached our ultimate goal in 2023 by bringing a Stanley Cup to Vegas. Bruce will forever be remembered with the utmost regard by our organization for what was accomplished here. With the stretch run of the 2025-26 regular season upon us, we believe that a change is necessary for us to return to the level of play that is expected of our club. With John Tortorella, we bring in a Stanley Cup Champion as well as one of the most experienced and respected coaches in the NHL. His guidance will be a great asset to our team at the pivotal point in the season we currently face. We look forward to welcoming John to Vegas.”

In other words, the Golden Knights are making last ditch effort to turn this season around and push for the playoffs. They believe Tortorella gives them a better shot than Cassidy. The Golden Knights have struggled lately, especially offensively post-Olympic break.

Late Coaching Changes Like This Are Rare

Chris Johnston writes, “Incredibly rare for a playoff-bound NHL team to change coaches this late in the regular season: The Golden Knights have eight games left and hope to follow the 2000 New Jersey Devils, who won a Stanley Cup when Larry Robinson replaced Robbie Ftorek after 74 games.”

Dan Rosen of NHL.com adds, “Anybody that is surprised that the Vegas Golden Knights would make this sharp of a turn behind the bench from Bruce Cassidy to John Tortorella with eight games remaining in the regular season has not been paying attention to the Vegas Golden Knights since they joined the NHL.”

Frank Seravalli agreed, writing, “Can’t do anything but marvel at the absolute ruthless nature with which the Vegas Golden Knights operate. No one is bulletproof. No acquisition is impossible. No one thing will stand in the way of attempting to win. Perhaps no more fascinating organization in pro sports.”

Is Tortorella The Right Guy for the Golden Knights?

Tortorella has built a lengthy 23-season NHL coaching career, most recently with the Philadelphia Flyers. He previously coached teams including the Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers, and Tampa Bay Lightning. Tortorella ranks sixth all-time in games coached (1,620) and has 770 wins. He won the Stanley Cup in 2004 with Tampa Bay and is a two-time Jack Adams Award winner, recognized as one of the NHL’s most accomplished American-born coaches.

For all of his accomplishments, he’s a polarizing coach who doesn’t always see eye to eye with his players. Some fans are alreay joking that Torts and Mitch Marner is going to one dramatic relationship.
