Avalanche Hold Their Breath After Scary Gabriel Landeskog Incident
Gabriel Landeskog required help leaving the ice after a frightening incident, leaving the Avalanche awaiting further injury updates.
Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog suffered what could be a serious injury in a frightening moment on the ice after crashing hard into the goal post. There isn’t much known at this point, but he did require assistance to leave the ice surface.
** Update: Avs’ head coach Jared Bednar said both Landeskog and Devon Toews are going to “miss some time.” Landeskog is still being evaluated. Scott Wedgewood said “rib cage area” … Nathan MacKinnon said (paraphrasing) bones heal easier than ligaments/tendons.”
The incident occurred when Landeskog appeared to toe-pick, lose his balance, and slide directly into the post with significant force. It was initially believed to be a possible rib injury, but he was slow to get up and ultimately needed help getting off the ice. He placed little to no weight on his left leg as teammates and staff assisted him.
The arena reportedly fell silent as the seriousness of the situation became clear.
Landeskog Injury Updates Are Hopefully Coming After Incident
At this point, there are no details on the nature of the injury. Early concern centered on Landeskog’s left knee or ankle after his skate caught an edge before the fall. However, there is also fear of a rib or upper-body injury resulting from the violent collision with the post. Rib injuries, whether bruised, strained, or broken, can be excruciating and severely limit breathing and movement.

Given everything Landeskog has already endured with prior injury issues, the moment was especially difficult to watch. Fans in the arena and online have been visibly shaken by the idea that he might have suffered another serious injury. Everyone is hoping it’s nothing major and that the injury is not related to his knee, but instead a less severe upper-body issue.
The Avalanche have yet to provide an official update.
