Ducks Trade Zellweger to Sabres for Wahlberg and Second-Round Pick

The Anaheim Ducks have traded defenseman Olen Zellweger to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for forward Anton Wahlberg and the 45th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
Zellweger, 22, played 76 games for Anaheim last season, posting 22 points. A 2021 second-round pick and pending RFA, he’s among the NHL’s fastest defensemen, drives strong possession (53.3% shot share), and excels in transition, ranking among league leaders in puck carries leading to shots.
Zellweger is one of the more intriguing young offensive defensemen in the league and represents a significant addition for a Sabres team pushing toward contention and having just traded Bowen Byram. The 22-year-old brings elite skating and puck-moving ability from the left side. He’s had two straight seasons of seven goals and over 20 points from the blue line. Zellweger is a good offensive weapon from the blueline and sneaky good defensively. He’s not a top-pair guy, but he’s solid.
For Anaheim, the return is a young forward in Wahlberg plus a second-round pick, and the trade is a touch surprising given the names they’re likely losing from their blue line: John Carlson, Jacob Trouba, and Roadko Gudas. One has to wonder if the Ducks have another move up their sleeve ahead of Friday’s NHL draft.
