Ducks Reportedly Already Have Contract Plan for Jacob Trouba

Rumors the Anaheim Ducks may try to flip Jacob Trouba may not be accurate as one report suggests the team already wants to talk contract.

According to Nick Kypreos of the Toronto Star, the Anaheim Ducks have no intention of flipping defenseman Jacob Trouba in a deadline deal, as some insiders have speculated. He writes that the Ducks worked hard to get the former New York Rangers captain out of New York, and the team has plans for him moving forward.

Kypreos writes:

“It’s sounding highly unlikely that the Ducks will flip Jacob Trouba at the deadline after acquiring him from the Rangers. Apparently a lot of work went into convincing Trouba that he’ll be a big part of their rebuild and also provide wonderful opportunities for his wife in the medical field after completing her residency. Trouba isn’t officially eligible to re-sign a new contract until July 1, but the Ducks are already exploring it.”

If the Ducks want to talk about an extension with Trouba, it will be intriguing to see what the defenseman wants. Trouba did say that when his wife was done with her residency, she would likely join him in Anaheim. If the two are open to staying there, would he consider an extension? Realistically, the Rangers aren’t bringing Trouba back. As such, he’ll have to find a place to call home that he and his wife are comfortable with. Anaheim might be as good a place as any.

What Does Trouba’s Next Contract Look Like?

As for what he’s looking for on a new deal, the money will be a fascinating storyline to watch. He’s not necessarily earned a raise over the $8 million per season he’s getting now, but with a rising salary cap, what he wants in free agency in 2026 may limit his options, assuming he’s open to a team-friendly deal to land in a location that suits his family.
