Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog had arthroscopic surgery on his knee and is expected to miss 12 weeks, according to reports. Obviously, this is not good news for the defending Stanley Cup Champions are already down Nazem Kadri in an offseason departure and Darren Helm’s injuries are lingering.
Landeskog also had knee surgery in March of last season. He returned for the playoffs and posted 11 goals and 20 points in 20 games but Bednar noted last month, “‘Landy’ is dealing with an injury from last season, lower-body, and he’s not ready to go.” It wasn’t clear what a timeline would be for his return, only that he would miss the start of the season. Things have changed and the news is not good.
The timeline on this will put Landeskog back on the ice potentially around mid-January. There will be growing concern about Landeskog’s status considering this is now the second surgery and one that came not long after the first. He turns 30 years old in November and still has six seasons on a contract that pays $7 million per season.
Even if the Avalanche go out and try to replace his production, they’ll need to save room on their cap to bring him back to the roster partway through the 2022-23 campaign.
