Canucks Sign J.T. Miller to a 7-Year, $56M Contract Extension
The Vancouver Canucks have signed forward J.T. Miller to a seven-year, $56 million contract extension.
The Vancouver Canucks took care of their biggest piece of business over the next few months, getting forward J.T. Miller signed to a long-term extension. There was plenty of chatter he could be headed to another destination if the two sides couldn’t come to an agreement, but General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the club has agreed to terms with the center on a 7-year contract worth a total $56 million.
The deal includes a full no-move clause, with a limited no-trade clause in the last three years of the deal. Reports are that the contract is relatively front-loaded in structure and has over $ 20 million in signing bonuses.
As per JFresh on Twitter, Miller “is a playmaking forward who produces very well despite not lighting the world on fire analytically. Does a lot of his damage on the powerplay and finished 5th in the league in secondary assists this season.” They add that they see him as a good player, especially as a passer, but not necessarily a star player. They argue that his 5v5 primary point production is not elite and that he’s hit a home run based on the best season he’s had in his career, but that this may be too rich a contract for a player who isn’t likely to maintain the same level of production into his thirties.
Miller, 29, has one season remaining on a five-year, $26.25 million contract ($5.25 million average annual value) he signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning on June 26, 2018. Alvin said of the signing:
“J.T. Miller is an impact player in this League and we are thrilled to have him re-signed with the Canucks long term. His production last season speaks for itself and his competitive drive provides a standard that our players can look up to. He will continue to be a key piece of this team for years to come.”
The good news for the organization and the fan base is that they won’t have the fear of a potential trade or loss of Miller to free agency next summer. This was something that followed the club this offseason and it certainly wasn’t a storyline they needed following them around.
