Tkachuk and Senators Have Yet to Discuss Extension

Despite being without a contract for the 2021-22 season, the Ottawa Senators have yet to discuss a contract extension with Brady Tkachuk.

The Ottawa Senators appear to have a very bright future ahead of them. That statement is one that most hockey fans would agree with, given the teams young talent in players like Brady Tkachuk, Thomas Chabot, Josh Norris, and Tim Stutzle. However, in order to keep that young core intact, they will have to figure out how to work them all in under the salary cap. For Stutzle and Norris, that isn’t a problem just yet, but the same cannot be said for Tkachuk, who is without a contract for the 2021-22 season.

By all accounts, Tkachuk is the undoubted leader of this team and arguably their best all around player despite being just 21-years-old. He can do it all, whether it’s agitating the opposing team, throwing a big hit, dropping the gloves, or scoring a timely goal. He is a player that any team would certainly love to have and would do everything they could to get locked up to a long-term deal. The Sens, however, appear to be in no rush to do so.

Back in January, Tkachuk told media when asked that he and the Sens hadn’t had much discussion when it came to an extension. At the time, that didn’t seem to be much of a problem given that the season had just kicked off and they had plenty of time to figure things out. However, we are now in June and apparently the discussion has continued to be nearly nonexistent. Appearing on the Cam and Strick podcast earlier this month, Tkachuk said there is still little talk between the two parties.

“We haven’t really started to talk yet,” Tkachuk said. “So, I’m going to give you the hockey answer and then I’m going to give you the real answer. I will let my agent and Pierre (Dorion) figure it out.”

Tkachuk called the process cool and exciting, but a stressful. He explained:

“I think it’s pretty cool going through this for the first time. Of course, it’s a little stressful, and people say you shouldn’t think about it, but it’s your life. For it now to be kind of getting into the works this summer, it’s definitely going to be exciting, and I hear different stories about different negotiations and how they go. Being there with Matthew and his negotiations, I’m just excited that it’s happening to me.”

By all accounts, Tkachuk, whose 36 points led the Senators this season, wants to remain with the team going forward. There is still time to get this figured out given that the 2021-22 campaign won’t began until October, but it is still quite odd that Dorion doesn’t seem to have even begun reaching out to Tkachuk’s agent at this point. It seems there is no tension from Tkachuk as of now, but this could turn into an interesting scenario to watch unfold over the summer.
