Another Day, Another Quinn Hughes Destination: New York Rangers

The list of suitors for Quinn Hughes is growing with every passing day, and the latest team to join the party are the New York Rangers.

The buzz around a potential Quinn Hughes trade is the number one talking point across the NHL right now, and while the New Jersey Devils have always felt like a formality as the landing spot, more and more other suitors have emerged in recent days and weeks.

It makes plenty of sense, given that this is the second-best defenseman in the world, and if the Devils were such a certainty, there wouldn’t be this much chatter about anyone else, so things have gotten really interesting.

One constant when it comes to trade destinations for Hughes is the East Coast, with New Jersey, of course, Detroit, Philadelphia, and most recently, Pittsburgh, all mentioned as possibilities. With that swirling around, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to hear another team out East linked to the superstar defenseman, and this time it’s the New York Rangers, as reported by insider David Pagnotta.

“With all the attention on the New Jersey Devils and Quinn Hughes lately, another team to look out for is the New York Rangers. That would allocate a lot of dollars to their backend, but it wouldn’t shock me to see the Blueshirts taking a swing,”

The 26-year-old is in year five of his six-year, $47.1 million extension, signed with the Canucks back in 2021. Should a team acquire Hughes before the March 6th trade deadline, they’ll have at least two possible playoff runs with him under contract before free agency of 2027.

What Could the Rangers Package for Quinn Hughes?

Whenever a new suitor is brought up in the Hughes sweepstakes, the most important question becomes: what do they have to offer?

In New York’s case, they might not be able to match up with the competition, though Vancouver has been said to have interest in Alexis Lafreniere in the past.

Pair him with draft capital and a prospect or two, potentially Gabe Perreault among others, and that’s about what the Rangers can put together.

Given that the Canucks are desperately looking for help at center, it will be difficult for New York to formulate a package that beats out or even equals others involved in a bidding war.

That being said, playing in the Big Apple is enticing, and it’s very possible that Hughes could have some say in a deal, so the Rangers will be one of a number of teams to keep an eye on moving forward.
