A Trade Between the Canucks and Oilers That Makes Sense
Vincent Desharnais’ season with the Vancouver Canucks has not gone as planned. Why does a trade back to the Edmonton Oilers make sense?
Vincent Desharnais has had a rough start with the Vancouver Canucks this season, raising questions about his future with the team. Signed to a two-year deal, the 28-year-old defenseman has struggled to find consistency and has been in and out of the lineup. The word is that the Canucks are shopping him. Desharnais’ best hockey came with the Edmonton Oilers, where he broke out last season as a dependable shutdown defender. If he can’t turn things around in Vancouver, could a trade back to Edmonton be a logical solution?
Desharnais’ Breakout Season With Edmonton
Desharnais emerged as a key depth piece for the Oilers in 2023-24, playing in 78 games and registering one goal, 10 assists, 122 blocked shots, and 134 hits. His physical style and ability to handle challenging defensive assignments made him a valuable part of Edmonton’s blue line. While his offensive contributions were minimal, his steady play in a shutdown role helped the Oilers reach the playoffs.
This success earned him his two-year, $4 million contract with Vancouver. Yet, his transition to the Canucks has been rocky, with inconsistent performances and limited offensive output. While he’s shown flashes of his old form, he hasn’t been able to replicate his impact in Edmonton.
Why Edmonton Would Be a Good Fit for Desharnais
The Oilers are familiar with what Desharnais brings to the table. Their defensive group could benefit from his physicality and shot-blocking abilities, especially in a bottom-pairing role. Edmonton’s high-powered offense often masks defensive shortcomings, but adding a player like Desharnais could help solidify their blue line.
Moreover, Desharnais already knows the system and culture in Edmonton, which could make for a smoother transition than trying to fit into a new team elsewhere. Returning to familiar surroundings might allow him to regain his confidence and rediscover the form that made him so effective last season.
The Oilers would need to send money back or get the Canucks to retain salary, but if Vancouver was flexible — which it sounds like they are — there could be something there.
Why the Canucks Might Consider a Trade
From Vancouver’s perspective, trading Desharnais would free up cap space and roster flexibility. If he doesn’t take advantage of his current opportunity to step up in Hronek’s absence, the Canucks might see more value in moving on from him. A trade to Edmonton could also yield an asset in return, whether it’s a draft pick or a prospect to bolster their depth.
A trade between the Canucks and Oilers involving Desharnais could make sense for both teams. Edmonton gets a familiar, reliable defender to shore up their blue line. Vancouver gains flexibility and potentially recoups some value. For Desharnais, a return to the team where he found his footing might be what he needs to salvage his career. Whether or not such a deal materializes, it’s clear that his future in Vancouver remains uncertain, and the coming weeks will be pivotal for both player and team.

It is a lovely idea, and Deshanrnais was well liked by teammates and fans. The problem is the Oilers are already deep at 6-7 Dmen. What we need is an upgrade on our 2nd pair, which Desharnais is not. At 2 million, we would need them to retain 1/2. They would want more for that than he is worth as a #7 Dman. This trade would not make sense for the Oilers.

Is everyone forgetting that he couldn’t even get into the Oiler’s lineup deep in the playoffs????
He would still be the 7th d-man at best with the Oilers.

The Oilers are not looking to help relieve cap space for the Canucks. Hes a good guy but theres lots of good guys in the AHL as well. He will most likey sent down to their AHL team. The only way I see it as an option is if we traded Josh Brown whos at 1M a season and the Canucks retained Half of Deshernais salary making it even still on our end.
