Rangers’ Lafreniere Under Pressure Amid Growing Trade Rumors
Alexis Lafreniere’s inconsistent play and trade speculation leads to questions as the Rangers star faces an uncertain future in New York.
Alexis Lafreniere, the 2020 first overall pick, is facing more scrutiny than ever as the New York Rangers navigate a mixed start to the season. Head coach Mike Sullivan, speaking after a recent game, acknowledged the winger’s talent but suggested the results haven’t matched expectations.
“I think it’s been a little bit of a mixed bag,” Sullivan said.
He added:
“I think he’s had some games where he’s had some strong games. He’s one of those talented guys that has the ability to create something out of nothing. We’ve moved him around our top six to try to find some combinations that we thought could help us create a little bit more finish to our game. But he’s had a number of looks on the power play and 5v5…It’s not like he hasn’t had opportunities to score goals. Obviously, we have higher expectations just from a production standpoint.”
As for what the Rangers plan to do with the forward. “Our message to him is just make sure we’re playing the game the right way, focus on the process. The byproduct of that will be you’re going to get opportunity, and when opportunity presents itself, take advantage.”

While Sullivan’s comments were measured, fans quickly weighed in on social media and trade talk is starting to pop up.
Some blamed inconsistent usage for stunting Lafreniere’s development, noting he’s been shuffled to the right wing despite being a natural left winger. Others criticized his decision-making and finishing, with one fan tweeting: “Catch a puck and shoot it. Then do it again 100 times… because he literally cannot catch a pass and shoot a puck simultaneously.”
Sullivan has heard some of what the fans are saying. “Sometimes there’s an assumption that just because somebody’s the first overall pick, they’re a generational talent. When they’re not, then that’s disappointing… and I don’t think that’s fair.”
Could the Rangers Trade Lafreniere?
Meanwhile, trade speculation has resurfaced. David Pagnotta was a guest on Inside Sports and noted that several teams explored the possibility of acquiring Lafreniere over the summer. While no major deals emerged, interest remains, particularly as New York evaluates whether Lafreniere can develop into the franchise-altering player the Rangers envisioned.
Among the last 15 first overall picks, Lafreniere ranks 13th in points per game, ahead of only Nail Yakupov and Owen Power, fueling questions about whether the team jumped the gun with his new contract.
Lafreniere may not meet the early expectations many had for him as a top pick, but does that mean the Rangers are planning to give up on the player? For now, no. Does that mean they won’t listen to trade offers? They would be crazy not to.
