Is the NHL Setting a Dangerous Standard for the Stanley Cup Final?

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun discusses potential challenges in the Stanley Cup Final and the issues with goaltender interference calls.

According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, the NHL might be setting a dangerous baseline for the NHL Stanley Cup Final. The comments concern goaltender interference challenges, and LeBrun seems to believe the league won’t overturn most, if not almost all, of them.

He wrote in a social post on Friday, “Just an observation before the Stanley Cup final next week, I wouldn’t challenge any goal for goalie interference. The league doesn’t want to overturn goals. That’s the base sentiment. Evidence has to be so overwhelming.”

The reason for his comments stem from the failed challenge by Martin St. Louis in the game between the Carolina Hurricanes and Montreal Canadiens on Friday. There was, what most people thought, was clear interference on the 1-0 goal. The goal was allowed to stand even though Jakub Dobes’ stick was essentially taken away from him.

LeBrun adds, “Why risk it? I don’t blame Martin St. Louis, it’s desperation time tonight for his team. More a comment for the Cup final.”

When questioned by another analyst about how it can be that the NHL has already “decided” this is the way the Final will be officiated, LeBrun responded, “Ask anyone who was at the GM meetings in March 2025 when they spent a lot of time on this. The commissioner made it clear that teams should be very confident when challenging these plays to overturn the call on the ice.”

Greg Wyshynski of ESPN questioned the motive by the league and pointed out that teams will be hurt by this decision if true. He wrote, “I mean, IDK how much more confident you can be than “my goalie was impeded by a player that landed on his arm and his stick. I think there have been some dumb Hail Mary challenges in the playoffs but didn’t think the Habs made one there.”

LeBrun agreed, but maintained that this is the way the NHL is going to call things.

What does it mean? For the two teams in the Final, go for it. Push the envelope and take a risk that the NHL won’t call back a questionable goal. It’s worth it if every ‘maybe’ is going to be allowed to stand.

This is just more of the NHL being a league that has different sets or rules and standards in different scenarios. It’s one of the things that drives fans and players nuts, simply because it’s now lost on what the rules actually are and players have to try to adjust on the fly. Because no one seems to know or understand the standard, it becomes hard to be consistent with calling a fair game or handing out discipline in an equitable fashion.
