Islanders and Canucks Could Pull Off Blockbuster Trade
The Islanders have their eye on the Vancouver Canucks’ star Elias Pettersson. They join a laundry list of teams that are interested in him
According to recent reports from The Hockey News’ New York Islanders site. The Islanders have their eye on the Vancouver Canucks’ star Elias Pettersson. They join a laundry list of teams that are interested in Pettersson. But could the Islanders and Canucks pull off a blockbuster? The centerpieces for a trade seem to be there.
Potential Trade Proposal: Pettersson for Dobson
If the Islanders are interested in Pettersson, who could the Canucks seek as a return? Well, there is the belief that the Canucks have had interest in defenceman Noah Dobson.
There haven’t been any reports that the Islanders have made Dobson available. However, if it meant bringing in a player like Pettersson, who can help the team score, there could be a chance they do it. New York has been known as a good defensive team but can’t find scoring help up front.
Pettersson would help that. He has scored 100+ points in a season once in his career. Yes, it means moving on from your young stud defenceman. But this could be the missing piece that your team needs to fix their scoring issues.
Why an Islanders Trade Might Make Sense for the Canucks
If this trade occurred, Pettersson would be reunited with Bo Horvat. Horvat was a member of the Canucks during the best statistical seasons of his career. Playing him on a line with Horvat and Kyle Palmieri or Anthony Duclair could bring out the best version of him since 2022-23—the season when he scored 102 points in 80 games.
As for Dobson, he would join a very good defense core that includes superstar Quinn Hughes. The fit on their backend is near perfect. Dobson is a right-handed shot who could play alongside Hughes, who is a left-handed shot. That pairing could be as good as the Colorado Avalanche’s top pairing of Cale Makar and Devon Toews.
Subsequently, that would push Filip Hronek down to the second pairing with Carson Soucy. Tyler Myers would move down to the third pairing. It would also open the door for the Canucks to trade Vincent Desharnais. Which could potentially even be part of this deal with the Islanders.
If a trade between the Canucks and Islanders for Pettersson and Dobson actually happens. It would be the biggest deal since the Matthew Tkachuk blockbuster in 2022.
