Injury Update As Anthony Stolarz Goes Down For Maple Leafs

Anthony Stolarz was injured on Thursday night and the Toronto Maple Leafs said he would not return to the game.

Anthony Stolarz was injured during the Toronto Maple Leafs game on Thursday night versus the Anaheim Ducks, and the team has released a statement saying he won’t return to the game. Joseph Woll is in the net for Stolarz, and obviously, anything long-term is not good news for Toronto.

Michael Amato of Sportsnet was one of many Toronto viewers wondering why the Leafs chose to go with Stolarz again in the net. He tweeted, “Nobody’s fault but you really have to question why they went back to Stolarz here. You have two goalies playing incredibly well, just rotate them and keep them sharp and fresh.”

It’s unclear when Stolarz sustained the injury. Toronto entered the first intermission with a 2-1 lead. Stolarz stopped seven shots in the opening period but allowed a power-play goal to Frank Vatrano. He has been excellent for the Maple Leafs this season, with a league-best .928 save percentage. He’s posting a 9-5-2 record alongside a 2.13 goals against average.

Stolarz joined the Maple Leafs in the offseason on a two-year, $5 million contract after serving as Sergei Bobrovsky’s backup during the Florida Panthers’ Stanley Cup-winning campaign. He and Woll have given the Leafs a really strong one-two punch this season.
