Flyers’ John Tortorella Explains His Clash with Matvei Michkov
John Tortorella and Matvei Michkov got into it on the bench and the Flyers rookie sat the rest of the game. Torts talked about that decision.
Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella continues to be in the headlines for his direct coaching approach. On Thursday, he got into it with star rookie Matvei Michkov on the bench. Those who watched the confrontation noticed that Michkov got benched when he made a bold decision to clap back. Tortorella was asked about the exchange and Michkov’s season low of 8:30 after the game.
To bench Michkov for the final half of the contest has stirred up criticism, despite the fact the rookie made a mistake, leading to a goal against the Flyers. The forward’s last action came at the 9:58 mark of the second period after missing a crucial defensive coverage on Simon Holmstrom.
Known for his demanding coaching style, Tortorella addressed his decision postgame, stressing that his reaction and decision was because he cared. “We’re trying to teach him how things are done here. The conduct of a pro, the things you do to play,” Tortorella explained. “I’m not going to fail him by calling away from situations that people may second guess. We’re going to do it the right way with this kid because he thinks he’s that special.”
Michkov, one of the NHL’s most highly touted young talents, has shown flashes of brilliance since joining the Flyers. However, his defensive lapses and inexperience are typical of a rookie. There are areas the coaching staff is determined to refine and the challenge with this player is the added language barrier.
When Is It Too Far Between Tortorella and Michkov?
Tortorella has a reputation for being tough on young players, particularly those he believes have star potential. The concern in Philly is that his tough-love approach might be counterproductive for a player like Michkov. If his understanding isn’t at the same level, how long before he turns on his coach and wants to leave? That may never happen, and Torts says he’s just trying to reinforce structure and accountability, but there’s still worry among some fans.

Torts is not apologizing for his actions. He believes he’s coming from a place of caring. He’s prioritizing his message that long-term development is more important and it’s not about the punishment. The hope is that Michkov responds positively and that his back-talk is a healthy part of that development and not a sign that he’s growing frustrated with his coach.
Fans and analysts will be watching closely now to see how Michkov responds to this challenge. Will the tough coaching approach accelerate his growth or create tension?
