3 Potential Trade Destinations for Winnipeg Jets’ Luke Schenn

Find out why Luke Schenn is a valuable asset for NHL teams looking to add grit and depth ahead of the trade deadline.

The veteran market is heating up around the NHL, and Luke Schenn has emerged as a practical target for teams looking to add grit before the trade deadline. Made a healthy scratch on the night he was set to play his 1,100th career game, rumors of a rift in Winnipeg have grown.

Insiders like David Pagnotta report that Schenn hasn’t requested a trade but is open to a change of scenery. With a $2.75 million cap hit and an expiring contract, he’s an appealing depth addition. Here are three likely landing spots.

Toronto Maple Leafs

A third stint in Toronto keeps coming up. On a recent episode of The Chris Johnston Show, Johnston said there are rumblings about the Maple Leafs reuniting with their former fifth overall pick.

Toronto needs help on the right side after Chris Tanev’s injury; they need a reliable, physical partner for Morgan Rielly. Schenn and Rielly clicked during the 2023 playoff run. Bringing him back would cost Toronto little in draft capital. Which makes it a very smart move for a team with limited assets.

Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers want a steady, physical presence who can clear the crease and lead without breaking the bank. Recent reports suggest Schenn fits what they are looking for — a “[Mattias] Ekholm Junior” type of addition.

Edmonton could take on his contract if Winnipeg retains a small portion of the salary. Adding a two-time Stanley Cup champion to the bottom pair gives the Oilers a veteran edge for another deep run in the Western Conference.

Dallas Stars

While Toronto and Edmonton get the most attention, the Dallas Stars have quietly emerged as a realistic landing spot. Specifically, they need a dependable partner for Thomas Harley on the second pair. Schenn provides playoff-ready experience, physicality, and shot blocking.

With Tyler Seguin on LTIR, the Stars can absorb Schenn’s contract without major salary cap gymnastics. However, they would need to move out at least $1 million in money to make the deal work. If Dallas can’t land a top-tier defender like Rasmus Andersson, Schenn is a smart and cheap way to bolster their blue line.
