Wild Stat: Oilers Secret Weapon Might Be Their Third Jersey

Learn about the Oilers third jersey and its surprising influence on their scoring success and overall results so far this season.

The Edmonton Oilers are outscoring opponents 21-9 this season when wearing their alternate uniforms. A new design that the Oilers have worn a few times this season, Edmonton has donned the new jerseys in the last two games and put up some pretty incredible numbers.

Against the Seattle Kraken, the Oilers scored nine goals. On Saturday night, they wore the jerseys again, putting up six against the Winnipeg Jets. In total, they’ve potted 21 goals and it feels like the jerseys are bringing them good luck.

Oilers’ play-by-play announcer Jack Michaels noted during the game on Saturday, “Oilers have played 7 periods in the cream jerseys and scored 19 goals.”

Fans have noticed, too. Baggedmilk of Oilers Nation wrote, “The Oilers woke up and chose violence, and the third jerseys fill them with hatred.” The actual Oilers Nation account added, “Me deciding that I do in fact like the new Oilers jerseys no matter what I complained when I first saw them.” and posted a gif of Conan O’Brien slamming his fists on a desk with the caption, “Never felt to alive!”

NHL teams are permitted to wear their alternate uniforms 12 to 15 times a season, no more. That means the Oilers, if they feel the jerseys are bringing them good luck and are superstitious about them, can put them on a few more times this season. The NHL does need to know when those jerseys are going to be worn, however. It’s not as simple as just deciding to wear them. The schedule is made in advance.

Needless to say, the Oilers might want to start looking into upping their plans and wearing those jerseys as often as possible. They’ve played extremely well in them.
