Walman’s Return Could Be First Domino in an Oilers Shakeup

With Jake Walman coming back into the lineup for the Edmonton Oiles, what other moves are coming or need to be made?

With news that the Edmonton Oilers have loaned Riley Stillman back to the AHL, the return of defenseman Jake Walman feels imminent. Multiple reports suggest that fans should expect Walman back soon. Whether that is Monday night against the Chicago Blackhawks remains to be seen, but Walman is on the road trip and says he feels ready to go.

The Oilers are doing their annual dads trip this week, and Walman was spotted with his father. The likelihood is that he’ll play with his dad there to watch, and that means Alec Regula or Ty Emberson could come out of the lineup, potentially putting Walman back with Darnell Nurse. Regula and Nurse have struggled together as a pairing, and the Oilers will be excited to have a more stable option to play alongside No. 25.

Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch hinted that one of the Monday or Tuesday games against the Chicago Blackhawks and Nashville Predators could be the date Walman returns to the lineup.

How Will The Oilers Fit Walman Back In?

The Oilers will likely move Adam Henrique to the Long-Term Injured Reserve, opening up enough cap space for the team to activate not just Walman, but Tristan Jarry from the LTIR, too. Jarry was also back on the ice this past week and is set to return in one of the next two games.

To make extra room on the cap, an Andrew Mangiapane trade is still expected and is being worked on. The Oilers are hoping to move all $3.6 million of his contract, and the Winnipeg Jets, Anaheim Ducks, and Vancouver Canucks have been mentioned as possible landing spots.

There is also the potential to send Ike Howard back down to the AHL, as there would be with Ingram, who is waiver-exempt.
