Tristan Jarry Injury Update: Who’s Next for the Oilers?

Tristan Jarry left Thursday’s game for the Edmonton Oilers with an injury; who’s next in line if it’s long-term?

The Edmonton Oilers picked up a big 3–1 win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night, but the victory came at a potentially high cost. Goaltender Tristan Jarry exited the game with an injury in just his third start with the team, leaving Edmonton wondering if they traded away their starter and already lost the replacement.

Jarry was forced to leave midway through the second period after sliding across the crease on a lateral push. Initial belief is that it’s a groin issue, but no official news has been offered. He skated straight to the bench and did not return. Calvin Pickard replaced him and was sharp in relief, stopping all shots he faced over the final 24 minutes to help secure the win.

“Right away, when he made that push across, it didn’t look good, so I figured I’d be going in,” Pickard said postgame. “You don’t have much time to think about it, you just get out there and play. It was a good win.”

Head coach Kris Knoblauch had no update on Jarry’s condition following the game, saying only that the team would know more after further evaluation. He wasn’t sure how serious it was.

If Jarry misses any extended time, the Oilers could be in a difficult spot. Edmonton moved on from Stuart Skinner with the expectation that Jarry was the better bet. Ultimately, he might be. However, an injury early on in his tenure with the team is about the worst possible news the Oilers can get coming out of this trade. While Jarry has not been injury-prone over his career, any absence now puts pressure on an organization that lacks obvious internal solutions.

Who Do the Oilers Turn to Now?

Pickard is the immediate solution, so the Oilers can only hope his numbers improve from the early part of the season. He looked good on Thursday, but his season hasn’t been one worth bragging about. Behind him, the Oilers would be looking at AHL goaltenders Connor Ingram or Matt Tomkins, neither of whom should give the organization hope they’re in good hands.

Externally, Edmonton has been linked to Buffalo Sabres goalie Alex Lyon. With Jarmo Kekäläinen recently taking over as general manager in Buffalo and the Sabres carrying a three-goalie rotation, Lyon’s name has popped up in trade speculation. An affordable option at $1.5 million, the Oilers might have been thinking about making this move regardless. However, if Jarry lands on long-term injured reserve, it’s logical to assume the Oilers would push all in.

The Oilers have already traveled to Minnesota for a Saturday matinee. There has been no news on call-ups or Jarry’s status. For now, the hope is that it’s nothing serious, and if it is, that Pickard can hold the fort. If not, Edmonton may be forced to act quickly.
