Trade Watch: Which Teams Still in the Mix For Mangiapane?

Pierre LeBrun reports the Edmonton Oilers are still trying to trade Andrew Mangiapane. Which teams are worth watching here?

The Edmonton Oilers are still looking at trade possibilities involving forward Andrew Mangiapane, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. As a result, Mangiapane’s role with the team remains unclear. The winger has been in and out of the lineup for more than a month now, and while a move hasn’t happened yet, it’s not because the Oilers haven’t been trying.

Interestingly, LeBrun notes:

“… to some degree, it’s surprising he hasn’t been traded yet. My understanding is that the Oilers are having ongoing conversations with teams open-minded about a return. But there hasn’t been a fit so far.”

LeBrun notes that general manager Stan Bowman has stayed in regular contact with several teams, working to find a situation where Mangiapane could get a better chance elsewhere. So far, though, nothing has lined up.

A big sticking point is the contract. Mangiapane has just six goals this season and carries a $3.6 million cap hit through next year. That combination of limited production and the fact he’s not on an expiring contract makes it tougher for playoff-bound teams to take on the full deal unless salary is retained or other pieces are involved.

The Oilers Are Determined To Find a Trade

Bowman seems determined to work the phone and have talks until he finds a trade partner. LeBrun adds, “My sense is that Bowman’s communication with the player’s agent, Allain Roy, has been as positive and constructive as it can be, given the difficult circumstances.”

Which Teams Are Still in the Mix For Mangiapane

As for where he could end up, teams outside the playoff mix might make the most sense. LeBrun points to clubs like the Winnipeg Jets, Ottawa Senators, and St. Louis Blues as possible fits. The extra year left on his contract could actually be a plus for those teams, offering some stability beyond this season.

For Edmonton, trading Mangiapane would create cap space and open the door for other roster upgrades as the postseason approaches. For now, talks continue — it may just take the right match to get a deal done.
