Top-Ten Talent? Penguins Insider Gives Oilers Scouting Report on Tristan Jarry

Oilers fans want to know more about their new goaltender, Tristan Jarry, and Penguins insider Josh Yohe provided exactly that.

Just when it seemed like the Edmonton Oilers’ search to upgrade in goal would have to wait until the offseason, Stan Bowman pulled a rabbit out of his hat and acquired Tristan Jarry. It’s a risky move that came at a cost, having to give up Stuart Skinner, Brett Kulak, and a second-round pick in 2029 in order to get the deal over the finish line.

If Jarry plays up to his potential, then it will be well worth the price of doing business. That being said, the veteran netminder has had trouble doing so on a consistent basis, which is where the questions arise.

Penguins insider Josh Yohe has followed Jarry throughout his entire NHL career in Pittsburgh, and on Friday, he gave Oilers Nation the rundown — good and bad — on the two-time All-Star during an appearance on Sports 1440.

Yohe said:

“I think he is a top-ten talent among goalies. The challenge for him was, and Edmonton fans might not like this, but in big moments, he wilted. He wasn’t good in the playoffs, and I think the Penguins ultimately didn’t trust him,”

Perhaps the playoff sample size isn’t a fair reflection of what he can or will do for the Oilers. Yohe is not wrong, however. Jarry’s postseason numbers in eight games haven’t been good. However, Jarry has been having his best season in years thus far in 2025-26, currently sporting a 9-3-1 record while posting a 2.66 goals-against average, a .909 save percentage, and one shutout in the process.

The 30-year-old is in the third season of the five-year, $26.875 million extension he signed with the Penguins after briefly testing free agency in 2023.

Tristan Jarry’s First Impression Will Come on Saturday Night

Oilers’ fans won’t have to wait long to get their first look at Tristan Jarry, as he’s getting thrown right into the fire just over 24 hours after the big trade.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Jarry is projected to start on Saturday night in Toronto against the Maple Leafs on Hockey Night in Canada. It doesn’t get much bigger than that.
