Three Players to Watch Ahead of the NHL Trade Roster Freeze
As the NHL roster freeze approaches in two days, are there any names or trades out there in the NHL rumor mill worth watching?
As the NHL’s holiday roster freeze approaches on Thursday, three players to watch are Brandon Saad, Kaapo Kakko, and Bowen Byram. These players have had their names circling around the NHL trade rumor mill, and they could also be on the move as the trade market heats up before the freeze. Two of the three names (Kakko and Saad) were pulled from their lineups recently, with some believing a trade might be imminent. Kakko made his way back in but had a lot to say about his coach, which resulted in his getting the lowest ice time on the roster.
Kaapo Kakko – New York Rangers
Kaapo Kakko’s future with the New York Rangers is now uncertain following the events over the last 24 hours. After being scratched for the game against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday, Kakko voiced his frustration to the media, revealing his displeasure with the decision. This public outburst has sparked speculation that Kakko could be one of the next Rangers moved, and a trade could happen sooner rather than later.
While speculation in New York is that the team has more of an issue with the general manager than the coach, Kakko’s frustration seems directly pointed at bench boss Peter Laviolette. Something’s got to give here and if this relationship is toxic, the Rangers might want to move one of the pieces out as soon as possible.
Brandon Saad
According to Elliotte Friedman, the St. Louis Blues are actively working to trade Brandon Saad. After acquiring Cam Fowler from the Anaheim Ducks, the Blues want to clear cap space, and moving Saad could be the key.
Friedman also reported that Saad is open to a change and another chance to contend for a Cup. The challenge in moving him is that he still has one year left on his contract and a full no-trade which gives him a ton of leverage in any talks.
Given the Blues’ desire to remain competitive, it’s unlikely they agree to retain much, if any of his salary. Saad could be one of the next big moves in the NHL trade market, with a deal potentially coming before the roster freeze.
Bowen Byram
Bowen Byram finds himself in an intriguing position. With significant offensive upside, he could be a strong asset for a team like the Buffalo Sabres. However, the Sabres are in a tough spot, try to break out of an 11-game losing streak, they may be forced to make a move sooner rather than later.
As trade rumors swirl, Byram’s name pops up more frequently. It will be interesting to see if he becomes one of the first trades to shake up the Sabres’ roster and when that move will happen.
All eyes will be on Kaapo Kakko, Brandon Saad, and Bowen Byram over the next 48 hours. Each player’s future remains uncertain, and with all three teams looking to make moves, it may mean that at least one of these three players has a new home before Christmas.
