Tension Rising in Toronto as Stolarz Criticizes Team’s Effort

Stolarz of the Maple Leafs delivers a candid critique of his team’s effort. Learn what he had to say after their loss to Seattle.

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz didn’t hold back on Saturday night, delivering a blunt postgame assessment of his team’s effort following a tough loss to the Seattle Kraken. In just his sixth game of the season with Toronto, Stolarz made it clear he’s already frustrated with the lack of compete level in front of him.

It’s rare for a player to call out his teammates in such fashion. It’s even rarer for a goaltender to do it to his team after just a handful of games. Stolarz didn’t care. The fiery backstop took no time to worry about whether he might offend a few sensitive egos in his locker room. He wants his teammates to learn a valuable lesson.

Asked about opponents crashing his crease, Stolarz turned the conversation on his Maple Leaf teammates. “I mean, it’s just playing hard,” he said. “We can take a page out of their book and start going to the net. For us, we like to go low to high and shoot, and for their goalie, it’s like playing catch in the yard. He’s seeing everything.”

The 30-year-old netminder didn’t stop there, criticizing the Leafs’ tendency to wait until it’s too late to play with urgency. “We’re not making it difficult,” Stolarz continued. “We made it difficult in the third and look what happened… but it’s too little too late.”

With Toronto’s record slipping early in the season, Stolarz’s comments sounded less like a rant and more like a challenge to his teammates. “We’re six games into the season—enough is enough,” he said. “We gotta start picking it up here.”

When asked if the team’s inconsistency was a matter of early-season jitters, Stolarz shut that down quickly. “A lot of guys have been here for a while,” he said. “Overtime, you can’t let someone beat you up the ice there… clear-cut breakaway with a minute left. If you want to be on the ice in that situation, you gotta work hard.”

With a new contract and a clear voice in the room, Stolarz isn’t shying away from accountability — and he’s demanding the same from the rest of the Maple Leafs.
