Social Media Post Indicates Patrik Laine Trade Before the Deadline

It appears as if Patrik Laine could once again be on the move ahead of the trade deadline.

Despite having played in just 57 games with the team, Patrik Laine’s time as a Montreal Canadien already feels like it could be nearing its end.

Injuries have plagued the Finnish winger over his two seasons with the Habs, and some have even wondered whether he’ll suit up in the red, white, and blue again. While Laine does appear to be nearing a return, speculation about his future in Montreal has only increased following a recent social media post from his spouse.

Just two days ago, Jordan Leigh Laine shared a video on Instagram hinting that the writing may be on the wall for her husband’s time in Montreal, suggesting a potential trade ahead of the deadline.

Laine wrote:

“Travelling for away games when it’s your husband’s contract year and you’re mentally preparing for the trade deadline. POV waiting on the hockey gods to decide your family’s future.”

The 27-year-old Laine has appeared in just five games this season, recording one point (an assist) in that span.

As referenced, he is a pending UFA in the fourth and final year of the four-year, $34.8 million extension signed with the Columbus Blue Jackets back in 2022.

There’s Not Much Room for Patrik Laine in Montreal

A major reason a Laine trade has always felt possible is his role—or lack thereof—even when healthy. He averaged just 12:36 of ice time in the five games he played to begin the season, while spending time on the fourth line.

Add in the emergence of Alexandre Texier and the Canadiens’ desire to add a true second-line center, and it makes sense that GM Kent Hughes could look to move Laine in order to give him a better opportunity elsewhere.

It will be interesting to see who kicks tires, because when he’s on his game, Laine still possesses one of the best shots in the league and could provide real value to a team in need of goal scoring.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals, Seattle Kraken, Utah Mammoth, San Jose Sharks, and Chicago Blackhawks are among the teams that could use his scoring ability and also have the cap space to absorb Laine’s hefty contract.
