Sidney Crosby Beats Mario Lemieux’s Record for Penguins Points

Sidney Crosby ties Mario Lemieux’s Penguins points record with 1,723—another milestone for one of hockey’s all-time greats.

Tonight, Sidney Crosby, the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, just beat Mario Lemieux’s record for points in the Penguins franchise. By putting up two points tonight, he has now put up 1,724 points. The game-tying goal came against the Montréal Canadiens earlier today. He added an assist later in the first period.

It’s an amazing record because Mario Lemieux was one of the best players in the history of hockey, and that certainly puts Crosby right up there with the best.

Crosby’s Legacy Is Growing Every Season

Crosby has done everything you can ask for in the NHL. He’s been a generational player since he was drafted in 2005. He has played his entire career with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He already holds the record as the all-time leader in assists, and he’s played more games than any other Penguins player. Now 37, in his 21st season in the NHL, he’s won the Stanley Cup in 2009, 2016, and 2017. He also won the Hart Trophy in 2007 and 2014.

He’s now eighth on the NHL all-time points list, just 31 points fewer than Steve Yzerman for seventh place. Crosby’s legacy is growing. Pierre LeBrun writes, “When you think back to 2005 after the lockout and the pressure on 87 (and 8) to help reset the NHL, Sidney Crosby has blown away expectations which seemed unrealistic to begin with. And he’s been a perfect ambassador for the game on and off the ice.”

Congratulations to him on breaking Mario Lemieux’s record with the Penguins.
