Sharks Acquire Nolan Allan, Laurent Brossoit in Trade With Blackhawks

The Sharks make a significant move by acquiring Brossoit and Allan in a trade on Thursday with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The San Jose Sharks acquired defenseman Nolan Allan, goaltender Laurent Brossoit, and a 2028 seventh-round pick from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for defenseman Jake Furlong, a 2028 fourth-round pick, and the contract of retired defenseman Ryan Ellis. The Sharks confirmed the details of the trade on Thursday afternoon.

Allan is the most intriguing piece in the deal. A 2021 first-round pick, the 22-year-old has NHL experience but struggled to develop as hoped in Chicago’s system and is no longer projected as a long-term fit on the Blackhawks’ blue line. With limited opportunity, a change of scenery gives him a fresh chance in San Jose, where he’ll play a key role with the AHL’s Barracuda.

Allan has played 43 NHL games, posting eight points, and 109 AHL games with 29 points, all in the Blackhawks organization. A WHL champion with Seattle in 2022-23, he earned multiple all-star honors and also won gold with Team Canada at the 2023 World Juniors.

Brossoit, 32, adds needed organizational goaltending depth after returning from significant knee and hip surgeries. While unlikely to crack the Sharks’ NHL tandem, he’s a clear upgrade as an AHL starter. Brossoit has played six AHL games this season with Rockford, posting a .901 save percentage and 3.38 GAA. In 140 NHL games, he owns a .911 SV% and was part of Vegas’ 2022–23 Stanley Cup run.

Chicago’s motivation centers on acquiring Ellis’ $6.25 million contract to help meet the cap floor, along with a draft pick upgrade and depth defenseman Furlong, who has yet to establish himself at the pro level.
