Scott Laughton Hoping Not to Be Traded By Toronto

With the trade deadline closing in and chatter that the Toronto Maple Leafs are on the verge of becoming sellers, Scott Laughton knows the next few weeks could determine more than just whether the team is competing in the playoffs this season. He might be wearing a different jersey when the playoffs roll around.

The 31-year-old forward is a pending unrestricted free agent, and with Toronto sliding badly in the standings, questions are growing about several names on the roster. Laughton, a heart-and-soul veteran with a team-friendly $1.5 million cap hit, would certainly draw interest from contenders.

Still, according to Sportsnet’s Luke Fox, Laughton made it clear that his preference is to stay in Toronto. “I sure hope so,” he told Sportsnet. “I have family close… Original Six team. It’s special every time you go on the ice.”

Laughton admitted he hasn’t even spoken much with his agent yet, choosing instead to focus on helping the Leafs climb out of their current hole. But he also understands the business side.

Laughton Knows He Could Be Traded

“They have a job to do, to try and make the team better,” he said. “And it’s my job to try and prove that I’m part of the solution.” If he isn’t, he’ll be part of another organization’s push. Among the teams that might have interest, the Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche, and other contenders would show interest. Teams tight to the cap ceiling would be particularly intrigued.

Laughton isn’t the biggest of offensive threats, but head coach Craig Berube praised the forward’s effort and presence in the room, calling him an important voice. Considering he doesn’t want to leave and the Leafs don’t want to lose him, is there a way for the two sides to work something out before the deadline?
