Samanski Earns Call-Up as Oilers Send Howard Back to AHL

The Edmonton Oilers recall Josh Samanski from the AHL. His impressive stats and impact on the team’s bottom-six could be key.

The Edmonton Oilers made a depth move up front on Monday, recalling forward Josh Samanski from the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors and assigning Isaac (Ike) Howard back to the minors.

Howard had spent several games with the Oilers but struggled to generate offense during his latest stint. He did look like he was developing some chemistry with Jack Roslovic and Matt Savoie, but constant line juggling due to injuries and Leon Draisaitl taking some time away for personal reasons meant inconsistency in the Oilers’ lineup on a nightly basis. Howard could never gain any real traction.

With the team looking for a different look in its bottom-six, Edmonton is turning to Samanski, who has been one of Bakersfield’s most reliable forwards this season.

An undrafted free agent signed by the Oilers in 2025, Samanski has quietly built a strong résumé in the AHL. The left-shot centre has seven goals and 28 points in 39 games with the Condors, production that has largely come at even strength. While he doesn’t see much power-play time, Samanski has been trusted in key situations and has earned a reputation as a responsible two-way player with speed and physical edge.

Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer noted that Samanski’s balanced game and plus-eight rating reflect his ability to contribute without being sheltered, calling the recall a deserved opportunity.

Samanski Might Be a Solid Fit In the Bottom Six

Recently named to Germany’s Olympic team, Samanski profiles as an NHL-ready depth centre capable of handling defensive responsibilities. He’s not the kind of player who needs top minutes to succeed, and he’s open to getting his hands dirty. His call-up adds versatility to Edmonton’s forward group as the season progresses.

Howard, meanwhile, returns to Bakersfield, where he had been producing at a high level prior to his recall. Back in a top-line role with heavy minutes, the move should benefit his continued development as he works toward becoming a consistent NHL contributor.
