Sabres On The Verge Of Big Decision With Alex Tuch

How close are Alex Tuch and the Buffalo Sabres to making a decision about his future? Near a playoff spot this season, this could get done.

The Buffalo Sabres have been one of the NHL’s biggest surprises this season. It has been a long time since they have played this well, but it looks like they are finally going to clinch a playoff berth this season. They currently sit in third place in the Atlantic Division and have been one of the hottest teams in the league.

There are, however, some major questions that still need to be answered. One of them is the future of Alex Tuch, who is one of their best forwards. He is on an expiring contract and could be offered a massive contract extension to stay with the Sabres. It has been recently reported that the Sabres are on the verge of a big decision regarding Tuch. So, let’s dive into it.

Sabres Could Be Close on a Contract With Tuch

According to NHL insider Chris Johnston, the Sabres are nearing a big decision on Tuch. The 29-year-old Syracuse, New York, native grew up a Buffalo fan. He could welcome a massive extension to keep him playing for his boyhood team long term. Johnston spoke on the Chris Johnston Show about a pending decision, and here’s what he had to say:

“It’s a little quiet in that sphere, but I don’t think it’s gonna remain that way. The Sabres are gonna have to figure out what the real price is, will they meet it, and if not they have a decision to make.”

It is clear that the Sabres are going to have to make some major roster decisions. Now that they have their newly hired general manager, Jarmo Kekäläinen, he will be tasked with completing this roster. Logically, it doesn’t make sense for them to part with Tuch at the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline or in the offseason, which suggests they could offer him a contract.

That contract is reported to be close to Los Angeles Kings forward Adrian Kempe, somewhere in the neighbourhood of $10 to $10.5 million over eight years. Regardless of his potential contract, he would likely come in below Rasmus Dahlin, who makes $11 million per season.
