Ryan Lomberg Rubs in Win Over Oilers After Latest Battle of Alberta

Ryan Lomberg didn’t hold back in celebrating his goal and the Flames’ win over the Oilers on Saturday night.

The Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers met for the third time this season—and the second time in just five days—on Saturday night in another edition of the Battle of Alberta. After being taken to school by Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl in a blowout loss before the holiday break, Calgary got its revenge with a win at the Scotiabank Saddledome, and Ryan Lomberg was right in the thick of the action.

Despite playing just 7:28 minutes, Lomberg made a massive impact, bringing his usual buzz-saw energy, laying six hits, and even contributing offensively with a breakaway goal in the second period.

That all-important tally came after Lomberg picked off an attempted D-to-D pass from Alec Regula and subsequently picked the top corner past goaltender Connor Ingram. To no surprise, he played to the crowd in celebration, and after the big win, he further endeared himself to Flames fans, throwing jabs at Regula, Ingram, and the Oilers.

When asked what he saw on the goal, Lomberg said:

“Lot of net. I got a little Pizza 73 deal here. So I think that (Alec) Regula, whatever his name was, he might be helping out with some of that. I told him I handed some pizzas out over the break, and I didn’t mean to me. I thought we were gonna go around town and hand them out but, no, good on him. Shout out Pizza 73. Great pizza. Put it right in the oven there,”

Lomberg’s goal was just his third of the campaign, pushing his season totals up to four points (three goals, one assist) in 34 games played. The 31-year-old is a pending UFA in the final year of the two-year, $4 million contract he signed to come to Calgary in free agency of 2024.

The Oilers Have February 4 Circled on Their Calendar

As if the Battle of Alberta didn’t already have enough heat to it, Lomberg has certainly spiced things up even more, setting the stage for an exciting finale in Calgary in just over a month.

The Flames and Oilers will meet for the fourth and final time of the season in early February back at the Saddledome, where Edmonton will be looking to ensure a series split against its bitter rivals.

It could be a big game for both teams, especially with Calgary riding a surprising surge back into playoff contention after a dreadful start—so buckle up and expect Lomberg to make his mark no matter how little ice time he gets.
