Rumors Swirling About Maple Leafs Landing Rasmus Andersson
Are the Maple Leafs making a play to acquire Ramus Andersson via trade? Learn more about the rumors.
It’s been well documented over the last week just how poorly the Toronto Maple Leafs are playing. It’s hard to find many positives, while all of the negatives have become glaring as the team struggles to form an identity.
What’s been quite shocking to see is the lack of detail defensively from a Craig Berube-coached team that had been one of the more stingy units over the last several years. The personnel didn’t change on the blueline over the summer, but perhaps that’s the problem, because what Toronto has doesn’t seem to be working, and they are well aware of that.
With the injury concerns for Chris Tanev and the struggles of Brandon Carlo, the right side needs help, and according to former Maple Leaf Jay Rosehill, Brad Treliving might be sniffing around Flames’ defenseman Rasmus Andersson, whom he drafted 53rd overall in Calgary back in 2015.
“I got a guy within the league who says Toronto Maple Leafs are actively trying hard to get Rasmus Andersson out of Calgary… We’ll keep tabs on that, but it has been confirmed that Toronto is certainly interested in Calgary’s Rasmus Andersson,” Rosehill said.
The 29-year-old, Andersson, is in the final season of the six-year, $27.3 million extension he inked with the Flames in 2020, set to become a UFA at season’s end.
Writing on the Wall for Andersson in Calgary
It should come as no surprise to hear Andersson’s name re-emerge in trade rumors, as he was listed atop trade bait boards all offseason long to no avail.

Things could have changed had the Flames been in the playoff picture closer to the deadline, but with a league-worst 4-12-2 record through 18 games, it’s a matter of if not when Andersson gets moved.
Toronto makes sense as a landing spot, given his connection to Treliving and their desperate need to improve the roster; however, whether the Maple Leafs have what it takes to put forth a strong enough package in return remains to be seen.
