Right Call?: Red-Hot Prospect Gets Look for Oilers After Offensive Surge
The Edmonton Oilers have recalled Quinn Hutson from the NHL after his red-hot offense justified a look. Is this the right call for Edmonton?
“Quinn Hutson has earned the recall,” said Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer after it was announced that the Edmonton Oilers would be calling up forward Quinn Hutson. Stauffer added, “…could use a boost in the secondary scoring department.”
Where Hutson will slot in and when he’ll see his first NHL action this season isn’t clear, but the Oilers have options. Hutson’s game is well-suited for the top six. At the same time, the Oilers ‘ third line has been absolutely abysmal over the last several games. They could use the offense, forcing teams to do more than just try to shut down top stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
Hutson leads all AHL rookies with 16 goals and 28 points, and he’s been red-hot this season. Early reaction from Oilers fans is that it’s about time Edmonton made this move. Many have argued that Hutson has been deserving of this for some time. That opinion might change, depending on the type of ice time he gets. As one fan wrote, “Let’s hope he’s not only given 6-8 minutes a night.”
Unfortunately, if not in the top six, those limited minutes could be a possibility.

Is This The Right Move for Quinn Hutson and the Oilers?
There’s no justification for demoting anyone in the top six just to squeeze Quinn in, so he’s likely to be marooned with Mattias Janmark, Andrew Mangiapane, or Adam Henrique — or worse, he could be stapled to the struggling Trent Frederic if Hutson is inserted into the lineup on Tuesday.
Most fans understand by now that one creative play outside head coach Kris Knoblauch’s offensive system could lead to Quinn being stapled to the bench. That’s not ideal, especially given that the callup halts his AHL momentum and potentially impacts his offensive confidence.
