Report: Kyle Dubas and the Penguins Would Love to Land Jason Robertson
Rumors connecting Jason Robertson to the Pittsburgh Penguins are starting to become very real.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have been one of the best stories around the NHL in 2025-26. This was a team full of veteran stars that the hockey world expected to bottom out and become major sellers ahead of the trade deadline. Instead, they currently sit third in the Metropolitan Division, pushing to make the playoffs for the first time since 2021–22.
Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Erik Karlsson continue to lead the charge well into their late thirties, though, if the Penguins want any real chance not just to make the playoffs but to compete once they’re there, GM Kyle Dubas will need to provide them some more help. By the sounds of it, Jason Robertson could be at the top of his wish list.
According to team reporter Josh Yohe, Pittsburgh’s interest in Robertson is very real, and they would love the opportunity to acquire him in a trade should he become available.
“The Penguins absolutely love Jason Robertson. They aren’t alone, of course. He’ll be in extreme demand if the Stars make him available.
Keeping Robertson, who is one of the NHL’s best wingers despite being kept off Team USA’s Olympic roster, is going to be an extremely difficult chore. The Penguins will be in a prime position behind an enticing mix of NHL veterans, draft picks, and more than enough cap space to satisfy Robertson’s financial requests.
Robertson is a young star, and the Penguins badly covet one of those. They could spend whatever it takes to get him without badly disrupting their rebuild,”
The 26-year-old Robertson is in the midst of a tremendous season, having racked up 56 points (27 goals, 29 assists) across 49 games. He’s a pending RFA in the fourth and final year of the four-year, $31 million extension signed with the Stars in 2022, which is why trade chatter has surfaced.
What Could the Penguins Offer for Jason Robertson?
Many wonder what Pittsburgh could even offer to entice GM Jim Nill to move on from his superstar winger, but, quite frankly, as Yohe alluded to, they have plenty.

Top-six forwards like Rickard Rakell and Bryan Rust, veterans such as Justin Brazeau and Anthony Mantha, prospects including Rutger McGroarty, Ville Koivunen, and Owen Pickering, plus 15 picks in the first three rounds over the next three drafts. They also possess an abundance of cap space, which will only increase this summer when Robertson is due for a new deal.
There’s no obvious reason for Robertson to want out of Dallas, a team with an elite core that should remain in contention for years to come. That said, those core players have already been paid, and now it’s Robertson’s turn. If the Stars are unwilling or unable to meet his price, he’ll deserve to get paid elsewhere—and Pittsburgh is one place that can make that happen.
