Red Wings’ UFA Likely Off Trade Market After Injury Update

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jeff Petry is out 6-8 weeks with an injury, which could affect trade deadline plans.

According to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli, Detroit Red Wings’ defenseman Jeff Petry is someone teams can probably remove from their trade bait boards. As part of an injury tweet on Sunday, Seravalli notes, “Jeff Petry, out since Jan. 2, underwent surgery and will miss 6-8 weeks.”

Seravalli did not comment on whether the Red Wings would place Petry on LTIR and keep him out the rest of the season. Doing so would give GM Steve Yzerman another $2.34 million on the salary cap to use at the trade deadline. But, an eight-week timeline on this injury means the end of March is when Petry would be due back. The season doesn’t end until Apri 17.

More interesting is what this might mean for teams that would have been looking at Petry in a deadline trade.

How Does Petry’s Injury Change Trade Deadline Plans?

The Red Wings are currently just outside the playoff picture. They’re in the conversation right now, but a losing streak or some unfortunate turns could see them become deadline sellers. Petry is a pending UFA and while it’s not clear what the market would have been for him, the Red Wings might have been tempted to move on.

Petry averages 19:11 for the Red Wings this season, and one goal and six points in 34 games. He’s past his prime and could be finishing up his career, but he might have been a low-cost trade addition and potentially a serviceable depth option for a contender.
