Recently Dealt $18M Winger Had Toronto on His No-Trade List
Insider Elliotte Friedman revealed what might have held up the Maple Leafs pursuit of Mason Marchment.
Mason Marchment has been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs quite a few times over the past few years. First, as a free agent in 2022 before signing with the Dallas Stars, then this offseason as a trade target before being dealt to the Seattle Kraken, and again before the recent holiday roster freeze—ultimately sent to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Striking out on three separate occasions might well have been due to limited cap space and draft picks or prospects. However, there appears to be another factor at play that ultimately put a wrench in any plans to bring him back to Toronto.
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman was recently asked about Marchment’s partial no-trade list on the FAN Hockey Show and confirmed that the Maple Leafs were among the teams on it, nixing any potential deal.
“I had heard that he had a no-move clause with regards to Toronto,”
“I believe that’s true, he has a partial no-trade, I heard Columbus was not on it; he didn’t have to waive to go there,”
The 30-year-old Marchment is a pending UFA in the fourth and final season of the four-year, $18 million deal he inked to join the Stars back in 2022. He’s tallied 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) across 32 games spent with the Kraken and Blue Jackets so far in 2025-26.
Why Didn’t Mason Marchment Want to Come to Toronto?
While there are many reasons a player might include a team on a no-trade list, fans are wondering if Marchment’s experience during his early stint as a Maple Leaf influenced his decision, as he supposedly wasn’t happy with how he was handled.

TSN insider Chris Johnston once referred to this on The Chris Johnston Show, which could explain part of the reasoning. Friedman also noted that Marchment initially took less money to go to Dallas, which eventually led GM Jim Nill to do him a favor and send him to a no-tax state in Seattle, and now he’s off to another lower-tax situation in Columbus—decisions that may have indirectly affected Toronto’s chances.
Interestingly enough, Marchment could hit free agency again this summer, giving the Maple Leafs an opportunity to go back to the well and see if the fourth time’s the charm in their pursuit.
