Rangers Commit to Will Borgen with Five-Year Extension
The New York Rangers have extended newly-acquired defenseman Will Borgen to a new deal worth $4.1 million per season.
The New York Rangers have locked in an important piece of the blue line. On Saturday, the Rangers signed defenseman Will Borgen to a five-year contract extension worth $4.1 million annually. Borgen was recently acquired in a trade, but he’s fit in well with the team, who had reportedly been a fan of his long before they acquired him.

Acquired from the Seattle Kraken earlier this season in a trade involving Kaapo Kakko and two 2025 draft picks, Borgen has quickly earned his place in the Rangers’ lineup. The Rangers arguably have a surplus of right-handed defensemen, but the Borgen extension means they prioritize him over other options.
Borgen has been a key piece of the Rangers’ recent turnaround. The club didn’t want to waste any time getting the 28-year-old signed. He’s now locked in at a reasonable rate until the 2029-30 season.
Borgen’s $4.1 million AAV is seen as a fair investment for a reliable second-pair defender. If he continues to progress and the Rangers make a playoff run, it could look like a steal.

Borgen Is Officially Off the NHL Trade Market
This deal also comes six weeks ahead of the NHL trade deadline on March 7, 2025. By taking a proactive approach, the Rangers have taken Borgen off the market and told teams not to bother asking about his availability.
