Rangers Made Serious Trade Offer to Canucks For Kiefer Sherwood

The New York Rangers made a trade offer to the Canucks for Keifer Sherwood. What was it and why was it rejected?

The New York Rangers’ interest in Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood appears to have stalled, and it may say more about Vancouver’s valuation of the player than New York’s willingness to spend.

According to TSN’s Insider Trading, the Rangers recently made a legitimate push to acquire Sherwood but were turned away. Chris Johnston reported that New York’s offer included a younger player with pedigree and a second-round pick — a package that wasn’t enough to get the Canucks to move.

“That wasn’t good enough to get it done,” Johnston said.

That valuation lines up with what Darren Dreger has been hearing around the league. Speaking on Sekeres & Price, Dreger said the asking price for Sherwood is steep — at least a first-round pick. One general manager told him it would likely take “a first plus,” while a source close to the Canucks suggested the price is either a first-rounder outright or a pick and a prospect.

Sherwood, 30, is enjoying a strong season, scoring 17 goals and adding six assists for 23 points through 44 games. Any team that adds him has to take the gamble that his production this season is an outlier. If he’s traded for and signs an extension, it’s difficult to gauge whether he will continue to bring solid goal scoring along with his physical play, forechecking, and willingness to do the hard work.

It’s the difference between what makes him a valued forward and what makes him a forward that teams will invest big dollars in.

Why the Rangers? Do They See Sherwood as a Fixer?

For the Rangers, the timing may now be off. Once viewed as potential buyers, New York appears to be drifting toward seller territory as another disappointing season unfolds. Elliotte Friedman noted on Friday’s 32 Thoughts podcast that they’re learning there might not be a quick fix available and that a rebuild might be inevitable.

For Vancouver, however, the situation is just beginning. As the 2026 trade deadline approaches, teams looking to add bottom-six scoring and physicality — including Edmonton, Boston, Ottawa, Washington, and Detroit — could revisit Sherwood’s availability.

If the Canucks stick to their price, it will be interesting to see who’s willing to pay it.
