Rangers Linked to Big Scoring Upgrade as Trade Pressure Builds

The New York Rangers may look to the trade market for offensive help, eyeing Alex Tuch name from the Buffalo Sabres.

The New York Rangers may look to the trade market for offensive help as they navigate an underwhelming 2025–26 season. New York is averaging just 2.55 goals per game, the lowest mark in the Eastern Conference, and currently sits outside the playoff picture. Complicating matters, Artemi Panarin is approaching unrestricted free agency, while Vincent Trocheck has also surfaced in trade speculation.

According to league insiders, Buffalo Sabres forward Alex Tuch could emerge as a potential target. Heavy.com cites The Athletic’s Chris Johnston, writing:

“Johnston is now predicting that New York will land Buffalo Sabres star Alex Tuch ahead of the trade deadline. The forward, like Panarin, is set to become a free agent in the summer, and extension talks have cooled. As a result, Tuch will likely be one of the most sought-after players in the trade market.”

Tuch has produced consistently and previously reached the 35-goal mark twice in recent seasons. It’s speculated he’s seeking more than $10 million per season in a long-term extension, which might be too rich for the Sabres. New York, however, could be open to a big deal if it winds up losing some of its top, higher-salaried contracts. Tuch’s future in Buffalo remains uncertain despite a front-office change and the Sabres’ recent surge up the standings.

What’s interesting is that Buffalo is now on a 10-game winning streak. They are right back in the mix for a playoff spot and if they remain in the playoff bubble, there isn’t a reason to justify trading Tuch. New York could explore a sign-and-trade scenario to secure Tuch long-term, which would mean the Sabres have either fallen out of contention or New York is trading pieces back that could help Buffalo continue being competitive.

For the Rangers, adding Tuch would address their scoring issues and help soften the potential loss of Panarin, providing the club with a proven, prime-age offensive replacement.
