Rangers Exploring Trade Options for Prospect Brennan Othmann

Explore the latest Brennan Othmann trade talk as the Rangers consider options for their young star and his development.

The New York Rangers may be exploring trade options for one of their top young assets. According to multiple reports, Brennan Othmann, the team’s 2021 first-round pick (16th overall), has been drawing interest from several NHL clubs.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman first noted that Othmann’s name was “gaining traction” in trade discussions, while The Athletic’s Vincent Mercogliano later confirmed that the Rangers are open to moving the 22-year-old winger. Though no formal trade request has been made, both sides reportedly agree that a “fresh start” could benefit Othmann’s development.

Despite his strong junior pedigree and offensive upside, Othmann has struggled to find a consistent NHL role. The Rangers’ depth on the left side has limited his opportunities, resulting in just 25 NHL games since 2023. He was reassigned to the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack before this season began. He has one assist in three games this season.

With several teams around the league looking to add young, cost-controlled forwards, Othmann’s skillset could make him an appealing trade chip. The Rangers, meanwhile, appear focused on maximizing his value rather than letting him stagnate in the minors. Mercogliano writes, “There is a fine line between holding out for the best value and allowing the market to fizzle, which the Rangers have struggled to navigate in the past.”

It’s early in the season, but as Friedman suggested, “there’s definitely discussion about the next steps of his career.” Stay tuned.
