Quinn Hughes’ “Fitzy” Reference Has Canucks Fans Concerned

Quinn Hughes addresses trade rumors between the Canucks and Devils, mentioning ‘Fitzy’, which raised eyebrows in Vancouver.

Quinn Hughes was asked for his comments on rumors that the Vancouver Canucks and New Jersey Devils had discussed him and a potential trade. Following Elliotte Friedman’s report that the two teams did discuss Hughes after the Canucks sent out a memo that UFAs and veterans were available, the media, understandably, wanted to get Hughes’ thoughts.

His answer concerned more than a few Canucks’ fans.

Hughes responded, “It wasn’t like, if there was a call, me, Jim and Fitzy hopped on the call. You know, I wasn’t apart of that but obviously I’m aware things like that could happen, for sure.”

It’s not the answer itself that seems unexpected, more than phrasing. Fans noticed that Hughes called Devils’ general manager “Fitzy” instead of Tom Fitzgerald. Hockey nicknames are certainly a thing in the NHL, but it’s arguably odd when a player uses them for an opposing GM. Fans ran with the idea that these two might be closer than people realize.

Quinn Hughes Devils Fitzgerald
Quinn Hughes calls Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald, “Fitzy”.

To be fair, Fitzgerald is known as Fitz in NHL circles. Hughes’ use of the nickname might not mean anything. For all the fans know, this is typical language used when talking about the Devils and their manager.

Should it be a reason for Canucks’ fans to panic? Maybe not. Does it suggest that the Devils are definitely the frontrunners to land Hughes if a trade is to be made? Probably.

“Fitzy” has also reportedly touched base with the Predators about Steven Stamkos and Ryan O’Reilly. If either is asked about those rumors, it will be intriguing to see how they respond and if they refer to the man pulling the strings in New Jersey the same way.
