3 Potential Trade Destinations for New Jersey Devils’ Dougie Hamilton
Dougie Hamilton’s situation with the New Jersey Devils is critical. Find out which teams are interested in his potential trade.
The relationship between the New Jersey Devils and Dougie Hamilton has hit a breaking point after he was a healthy scratch last Sunday against the Winnipeg Jets. His agent, J.P. Barry, has made it clear Hamilton is willing to be flexible with his trade protection to get a fresh start, and the league is paying attention. His $9 million cap hit makes any move tricky, but a few teams have the need and motivation to make it happen. Here are the three most likely destinations for Hamilton.
Toronto Maple Leafs
A homecoming for the Toronto native has been the biggest talking point this past week. The Maple Leafs are in need of help on the right side after Chris Tanev went down again. James Murphy of RG Media reports that Toronto has expressed their interest in the Devils’ defenseman.
Interestingly, Hamilton had the Maple Leafs on his no-trade list before, but that’s no longer expected to be an issue. The main obstacle is the cap. Toronto would likely need New Jersey to retain part of his salary. Or take back a player like Calle Jarnkrok to make it work.
San Jose Sharks
San Jose made a significant push to land Hamilton over the summer before he used his no-move clause to block the deal. Since then, things have changed. Macklin Celebrini has led the Sharks back into playoff contention. As a result, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman suggested Hamilton might now be open to a move there.

San Jose has the cap space to take on his full contract. Which makes them an appealing option for a Devils team looking to clear cap space and a roster spot.
Utah Mammoth
The Utah Mammoth are emerging as a dark horse. In just their second season, they’re looking to make a splash. Like the Sharks, Utah has the flexibility to take Hamilton without New Jersey retaining salary. The Mammoth want an elite offensive defenseman to pair with their young core and lead the power play.
Hamilton’s camp wants a place where he can play a featured role, and a rising team in a new market could be the perfect spot to regain the form that once made him a Norris Trophy contender.
It is clear that Hamilton will be traded. At this point, it is a matter of when, not if. All that’s left to figure out is where exactly he will end up and what the Devils’ asking price will be set at.
