Play of Oilers’ Top Goalie Targets Going in Opposite Directions

The Edmonton Oilers have been linked to Tristan Jarry and Jordan Binnington, though their recent play could determine who they pursue.

The Edmonton Oilers’ goaltending situation has an entirely different feel after the previous game. Following Tuesday’s 8-3 embarrassment at home against Dallas, it wouldn’t have been a surprise to see a Stuart Skinner trade soon to follow. The rumor mill was hot in those next few days, but he was given an opportunity to bounce back on Saturday in Seattle and did so via a 26-save shutout.

That has, of course, resulted in the temperature cooling down, but it’s going to take way more than one good performance for the Oilers to trust the Skinner and Calvin Pickard tandem for another full season.

Because of that, the organization and fan base have their eyes on the trade market, particularly on Jordan Binnington and Tristan Jarry, the most rumored options. While many are skeptical about either of them being a clear upgrade over what Edmonton currently has, if they had to choose between the two, their recent play would certainly suggest Jarry is the better bet.

Jarry Taking the Lead Among Those Looking for a Trade Fit For Oilers

The 30-year-old has been very solid since returning from injury, which included stopping 28 out of 29 shots to snap the Flyers’ three-game winning streak in Philadelphia on Monday. He now posts an 8-2-0 record on the season, with a 2.57 goals-against average, a .911 save percentage, and one shutout.

On the other hand, the 32-year-old Binnington was yanked on Monday night after allowing two goals on just five shots against Anaheim, which he evidently was not happy about. His record fell to 6-6-5 along with his 3.20 goals-against average and .878 save percentage.

It’s an extremely tough decision that involves a multitude of different factors, but if the Oilers front office was truly torn on Jarry and Binnington, the results thus far in 2025-26 certainly lean in the direction of Jarry.

What Do Edmonton Oilers’ Fans Want?

We’re never going to know what Stan Bowman and company think about this debate unless they make the move to acquire one or the other.

That being said, we can get a grasp on how Oilers Nation feels when it comes to Jarry versus Binnington, and a recent poll from Oilers Daily on X (formerly Twitter) also favored the Penguins netminder.

That 1,939-vote sample is pretty sizable, and Jarry’s play has only gotten better since the end results of the poll, while Binnington, as we’ve referred to, has continued to be mired in inconsistency.

Are the Oilers going to make a decision based on what their fans say on X? No, but it’s certainly interesting to see how Jarry has reshaped his image one year removed from being sent down to the AHL.
