Phillip Danault Reportedly Demands Trade Out Of LA: 3 Frontrunners

Phillip Danault has reportedly requested a trade out of Los Angeles, but the Kings not obligated to rush a deal. Three frontrunners emerge.

As per reports, Phillip Danault has now officially requested a trade out of Los Angeles. Danault’s name has been swirling around the rumour mill for a little while now, and it would appear he may be the driving force in a move.

According to several sources, including Marco D’Amico of RG.org, Danault is looking for a fresh start. D’Amico writes, “Sources indicate that Phil Danault has asked for a tradein LA. His camp hopes a deal gets done sooner than later; prior to the Trade Freeze.” He adds, “Kings are willing to wait it out, looking for a player-for-player trade.”

As for the teams linked to a Danault trade, the Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, and Carolina Hurricanes appear to be the early frontrunners.

Danault is currently having the worst season of his career, still goalless through 30 games with only five helpers. Danault has never been known for his offensive prowess, but he has given guys like Connor McDavid headaches due to his elite shutdown defensive abilities.

It would appear now that Danault feels a change of scenery might be what he needs to turn his season around. Time’s starting to tick in Danault’s career, and he obviously feels he can help support a playoff team down the stretch and into next year.

Danault carries a $5.5 million contract for this year and next before becoming a UFA. The Kings might have to retain a portion of the contract to facilitate a move, but that certainly isn’t something they’ll be eager to do.

The Kings might not feel obligated to move such a valuable defensive piece despite the request and lack of production.
