Penguins News and Rumors: Jarry-Oilers Latest, Malkin Injury, Prospect Update

The latest news and rumors around the Pittsburgh Penguins, including Tristan Jarry Oilers chatter, Evgeni Malkin’s injury, and prospect talk.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are coming off an almost-perfect three-game road trip that included wins in Philadelphia and Tampa Bay and was capped off with a shootout loss in Dallas to the Stars. Five out of a possible six points against three strong teams is about as good as you could’ve hoped for, and it certainly seems as if their hot start was no fluke.

Because of this unexpected early playoff push, talk of selling off veterans has cooled down considerably, though one name that continues to swirl around the rumor mill is Tristan Jarry. So, what’s the deal with Jarry and the Oilers? How serious is the injury for Evgeni Malkin? All of that and an update on Pittsburgh’s impressive 2025 draft class in this edition of the latest news and rumors around the Penguins.

The Latest on Tristan Jarry and the Oilers

Speculation linking Jarry to the Oilers has been hot in recent weeks, and Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman detailed the latest over the weekend. Edmonton is very interested in the two-time All-Star, particularly with the idea of pairing him in tandem with Stuart Skinner. However, given their cap constraints, they’ll need Pittsburgh to retain salary, something that Kyle Dubas is not keen on.

As Friedman stated, it’s a complicated deal that’s become even trickier with the Penguins in a playoff spot, and Jarry’s tremendous play being a major reason for it. As of right now, it doesn’t make sense for Dubas to get rid of his number-one goalie, who, quite frankly, looks as good as he has at any point in his career.

That being said, Jarry has a history of inconsistent performance and injury issues, so if the Oilers pony up with a strong enough offer, it has to be considered, given that his trade value may never be higher than where it currently stands.

Evgeni Malkin Injury Update

After leading the charge in the Penguins’ 4-3 win over the Lightning on Thursday night with three points (two goals, one assist), Malkin missed Saturday’s practice because of maintenance. It was thought to be nothing more than a rest day, though it turns out that wasn’t the case, as the 39-year-old then missed Sunday night’s game in Dallas with an upper-body injury.

The team labeled Malkin day-to-day, though it doesn’t appear to be anything serious, as reporter Josh Yohe wrote that he was present at practice on Saturday and seemed fine. He expects the superstar center to return to the lineup at some point this week, where the Pens will begin a five-game homestand against the Ducks on Tuesday night.

Penguins’ Prospect Update

While the Penguins have seen several prospects insert themselves onto the big club in Pittsburgh, 2025 first-round pick (24th overall) Will Horcoff is dominating College hockey. The 6’5, 201-pound center has 28 points (19 goals, nine assists) in 20 games, tied for the NCAA scoring lead.

Much like the Ben Kindel pick, Dubas was scrutinized for taking Horcoff so high, though it’s looking like another steal of a selection that will help accelerate things further in their retool.

Speaking of Kindel, there were reports on Sunday that he would be loaned to Team Canada for the World Juniors. That was quickly shut down, and when Hockey Canada released its roster on Monday, Kindel’s name was not present, so Penguins fans can breathe a sigh of relief.
