Patrick Kane Out for Red Wings Road Trip, Injury Could Be Worse Than Expected

Injury update: Patrick Kane will not travel with the Red Wings due to his injury. Read to know more about his recovery.

The Detroit Red Wings will be without Patrick Kane for at least the next two games, as the veteran forward continues to recover from an upper-body injury sustained last Friday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Head coach Todd McLellan confirmed Tuesday that Kane will not travel with the team for their upcoming road trip as the Red Wings take on the Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders.

Kane, 36, was injured late in Detroit’s 2-1 overtime win over Tampa Bay after losing an edge while battling for the puck and crashing hard into the boards. He appeared to grab at his left side before skating off slowly. While the initial belief was that the injury wasn’t serious, The Grind Line Podcast is now suggesting it may be worse than first thought.

“He won’t make the trip,” McLellan said. “We’ll re-evaluate him before Saturday’s game at home.” The Red Wings are scheduled to host the St. Louis Blues this weekend, and Kane’s status for that matchup remains uncertain.

The veteran winger already missed Sunday’s 4-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers, but Detroit has remained hot without him. The Red Wings have started the season with a 5-1 record and sit atop the Atlantic Division. They are tied for third in the league with 10 points.

Kane, who re-signed with Detroit in June on a one-year, $3 million deal, had been finding his rhythm again after off-season hip surgery last year. He had five points in five games before his injury.

For now, the Red Wings will proceed cautiously. Given Kane’s injury history and the long season ahead, Detroit seems in no rush to bring him back before he’s fully ready. The hope is that reports of this injury being serious are inaccurate.
